Cavalletta: A High Stool with a Twist

Eduardo Baroni's Award-Winning Design Marries Comfort and Aesthetics

Introducing Cavalletta, a high stool that redefines the intersection of form and function. Designed by Eduardo Baroni, this piece of furniture is a testament to innovative design and traditional craftsmanship.

Baroni's inspiration for the Cavalletta stool came from a simple brief: create a high stool for a company known for its contemporary wood furniture. The design process began with the seat, sculpted to mimic the human body's contour. The stool's name, Cavalletta, which means grasshopper in Italian, was inspired by the thin, angled legs that define its side view. The final structure, developed using traditional woodworking techniques, embodies lightness and simplicity.

The Cavalletta stool stands out for its sculpted solid wood seat and visually light structure. Crafted from Brazilian Jequitibá wood, the seat is CNC sculpted into an ergonomic shape, offering maximum comfort and an organic look. The design is versatile, suitable for various balcony heights, and highlights the natural beauty of the wood. The overall design conveys lightness, urban style, and comfort.

The stool is produced using traditional woodworking techniques, with the seat being the only part crafted using CNC technology. Despite its lightness, the stool is sturdy and easy to handle. It is pre-assembled, making it user-friendly and easy to move, rotate, or clean. The stool's design, devoid of side or back restraints, makes it easily accessible even in tight spaces.

The design process took about a year, with several prototypes made in-house by the client. The primary research focus was on ergonomic studies and comfort tests. Employees of the factory contributed to the design process by testing the prototypes and providing feedback. The main challenge was to balance comfort, aesthetics, and production cost, resulting in a modern yet organic shape that contrasts with the angled and skinny frame.

The Cavalletta stool, designed for both residential and commercial use, is suitable for various balcony heights and decoration styles. The design emphasizes the lightness, contemporary style, and comfort of the stool. This innovative design earned Baroni the Silver A' Furniture Design Award in 2021, a prestigious accolade awarded to designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise and innovation.
